Katarzyna Lappin is originally from Warsaw, Poland and currently resides in Chula Vista, CA with her husband and two children. Primarily a self-taught artist, Lappin started painting when she was 23 years old. She received basic instruction from a professional artist friend in the late 1980's who introduced her to the old techniques and color mixing procedures. Under his guidance she painted her first two paintings and then continued intermittently to develop her skills on her own. Since 2010, Lappin has been working as a professional painter and has received many awards and recognitions. She won second place at the Chula Vista 2010 Harbor Days Festival. This award inspired Lappin to paint a series of twenty works representing landmarks and landscapes in Chula Vista titled Chula Vista Centennial. The first set of paintings titled “Otay Lakes Dam"and the "Wolves" were painted in 2010 and eighteen more followed in 2011. All the paintings were created in Chula Vista and each painting has a story behind it that reflects the community. Lappin’s work celebrates Chula Vista and provides a record for future residents. It is especially valuable because it is uncommon to find artists in Chula Vista who focus on their community and chose to incorporate their daily environment into their art. Lappin is about to release a new book and a documentary video titled "Katarzyna Lappin Paintings of Chula Vista". In the book she discusses her work and sources of inspiration. The book should be available in the fall of 2012.

Katarzyna is very involved in the arts community in Chula Vista and is a member of South Bayfront Artists, Chula Vista Art Guild and she is part of the City of Chula Vista Cultural Arts Commission. Her current exhibit at the court house titled Chula Vista Centennial developed from a collaboration between the South Bay Superior Court and the Chula Vista Cultural Arts Commission. The courthouse reached out to commissioner Gore to develop a rotation of exhibits. The courthouse is planning to have a new exhibit every three months. The goal is to have more art come to Chula Vista and provide local artists with a space to hang their work. Chula Vista has a need for exhibit space and nontraditional venues have been essential in fulfilling that need. Lappin is the first artist for this project to exhibit at the court house and her work has been pleasantly received.

Katarzyna Lappin works in oil paints following the tradition of the XVII century Dutch masters who are her primary source of inspiration. What she admires about the Dutch Masters is their devotion to detail and the self-discipline they acquired in order to execute the work on the finest level. Lappin cites the work of Jacob van Hulsdonck, Jan Davidsz de Heem, Ambrosias Bosschaert or Baltazar van der Ast and Louise Moillon (French) as having influenced her style and her technique. She states that she developed an individual expression using a much different color palette than the dark tones common in Flemish painters. Lappin chooses to express life and its vibrant colors and to vitalize every object she paints in order to evoke positive feelings within the viewer. The "Dutch" influence can be detected in her work in paintings such as: "Still Life with Grapes” and “A Bowl of Cherries,"Dutch Flowers", "Night Sail", "Afternoon at the Riverbank". None of these works are inspired by a specific Dutch master but they draw upon a general XVII century Dutch trend.

Lappin describes her style as realistic but subjective, it reflects her imaginative interpretation of the surrounding world. She states “every painting is like a still shot from a dream...”
